3 AI drops worth watching — May 7

A quick look at three AI releases from May 7 that builders should have on their radar.

OpenAI ships realtime voice models

OpenAI added new realtime voice models to the API, with built-in reasoning, translation, and transcription capabilities. The models are designed for natural-feeling voice applications and are available immediately to API developers.

For builders adding voice to their apps, the bundled reasoning + translation in a single API call removes a lot of pipeline complexity that previously required stitching together multiple services.

Anthropic releases agents for financial services

Anthropic released ten new Cowork and Claude Code plugins, integrations with the Microsoft 365 suite, new connectors, and an MCP app specifically for financial services and insurance organizations.

The financial-services-specific MCP app is notable: it signals the model context protocol is moving from generic developer tool toward domain-specific deployments. Expect more vertical MCP apps to follow.

Model Context Protocol becomes the open standard

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is becoming the open standard for connecting AI assistants to systems where data lives — content repositories, business tools, and development environments.

For agent builders, MCP adoption means less custom integration work per data source. As more vendors ship MCP-compatible endpoints, the plumbing layer of agent development is getting simpler.
